Description

Build the World Before You Fight Over It

There's something deeply satisfying about conquering a map your opponents helped design. Small World: Realms hands players a set of modular terrain tiles and lets the table collectively assemble the battlefield before a single fantasy race sets foot on it — then turns everyone loose to compete for dominance over the world they just built. The result is a game that feels fresh every session, with stakes that feel personal because the terrain itself is personal.

What It Is

Days of Wonder — known for polished production and games that are easy to teach but hard to put down — releases Realms as a substantial expansion to Small World, one of the most beloved area-control games of the past two decades. The core Small World experience pits players against each other as they command fantastical races — Dragonmaster Humans, Seafaring Dwarves, Pillaging Orcs — each paired with a special power that creates wild, unpredictable combinations. Races rise, conquer, decline, and are replaced as empires ebb and flow across a fixed map. Realms changes the map itself. Players construct custom scenarios using double-sided terrain tiles, unlocking radically different configurations for two, three, four, five, or six players, including dedicated solo and cooperative modes that the base game never offered.

Beyond the modular map, Realms introduces new scenario cards that set specific victory conditions, giving each game a narrative shape — defend the mountain pass, race to control the river crossings — rather than simply totalling up coins at the end. It's a meaningful evolution of the formula that rewards players who thought they'd seen everything Small World had to offer.

Who It's For

This expansion is aimed squarely at Small World fans ready to breathe new life into their collection, but the solo and cooperative modes make it genuinely appealing to players who bounced off the original's competitive edge. The recommended age of eight and up holds here, and the game supports two to six players — the modular maps mean every player count actually has a purpose-built layout rather than a compromised one. Sessions run light to medium in weight: the rules won't take the evening to explain, but there's enough strategic texture to keep experienced players engaged for 40 to 80 minutes depending on the scenario.

Features & Highlights

The double-sided modular terrain tiles are the centrepiece — well-constructed, visually consistent with the Small World aesthetic, and varied enough that even frequent play won't exhaust the configurations quickly. The inclusion of solo and cooperative scenario cards is a genuine addition to the franchise rather than a token gesture, giving the expansion a shelf life well beyond what additional races or powers alone would provide. Realms does not include the base Small World game and requires it to play — but for anyone already invested in the world, this is one of the most substantive expansions the line has seen.
