Overview

In Yu-Gi-Oh!, players use a deck of cards featuring various monsters, spells, and traps to battle against each other. The objective is to reduce your opponent's Life Points (starting at 8000) to zero using strategic card play. Players take turns summoning monsters, activating spell and trap cards, and engaging in battles to outmaneuver their opponent.

Types of Cards

  1. Monster Cards: These are the primary cards used in battle. They come in various types (Normal, Effect, Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, Pendulum, and Link) and attributes (Earth, Fire, Water, etc.). Monsters also have levels or ranks and can be summoned through different methods.
  2. Spell Cards: These provide various effects that can aid the player, such as boosting monster stats, destroying opponent cards, or searching for specific cards from the deck.
  3. Trap Cards: These are usually activated in response to an opponent's move. They can counter attacks, negate effects, or disrupt an opponent's strategy.

Game Structure

  • Deck: Players typically use a Main Deck with 40 to 60 cards. A Side Deck (up to 15 cards) and an Extra Deck (up to 15 cards) are optional, containing specialized cards like Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, and Link Monsters.
  • Phases of Play: Each turn is divided into several phases:
    1. Draw Phase: Draw one card from your deck.
    2. Standby Phase: Prepare for the next move (used for certain effects).
    3. Main Phase 1: Summon monsters, set spell/trap cards, or activate effects.
    4. Battle Phase: Engage in combat with opponent's monsters.
    5. Main Phase 2: Make additional plays or changes.
    6. End Phase: Conclude the turn and resolve effects.

Formats

  • Advanced Format: This is the most common format, where certain cards are forbidden or limited to maintain balance.
  • Traditional Format: All cards are allowed, but some may be limited.
