Where the Trees Meet the Open Sky
There's a particular kind of tension in Forest Shuffle when the final cards come down and everyone leans in to count — and the Woodland Edge Expansion makes that moment richer. New creatures move through the undergrowth, shrubs create unexpected scoring chains, and the forest you've grown looks a little different every time. It's a small box with a big impact on how the game feels from round to round.
A New Ecosystem at the Edge
Lookout Games has built a well-earned reputation for games with genuine ecological soul, and Woodland Edge fits that identity completely. Designed by Kosch as a companion to the original Forest Shuffle, this 2024 expansion introduces 36 new cards representing the species and plants that thrive at the boundary between woodland and open land — hedgerows, bats, magpies, and the bushes and shrubs that shelter them. These cards shuffle directly into your existing deck, so the variety creeps in naturally rather than arriving all at once.
The expansion's standout addition is the shrub habitat — a new card type that provides its own placement slots and generates ongoing effects as your forest develops. It deepens the strategic conversation without layering on extra rules overhead. You're still building a forest, still racing to create the most harmonious ecosystem, but now the edges of that forest have their own logic worth planning around.
Who'll Love It
Woodland Edge plays with the same 2–5 players and suits the same crowd as the base game — families comfortable with light-to-medium strategy, players aged 10 and up, and anyone who already has Forest Shuffle on the shelf and wants more from it. Sessions run around 60 minutes. It's well-suited to game nights where the base game has become familiar enough that players are ready for something that shakes the card pool up without reinventing the experience.
What's in the Box
The 36 cards are illustrated by Toni Llobet and Judit Piella, the same wildlife artists whose work gives Forest Shuffle its distinctive warmth and detail. The expansion is part of Lookout's Greenline range — FSC-certified paper, plastic-free packaging — and the whole thing is sized to fit inside the base game's box. No extra shelf space required, no separate storage puzzle to solve. A copy of Forest Shuffle is required to play.
