Description

A Journey Worth Taking Again and Again

There's something satisfying about rolling a handful of dice and watching a story unfold from the results. In The Hobbit: There and Back Again, every session is a race through one of literature's most beloved adventures — and the dice rarely cooperate the way you'd hope. That tension, between what you need and what fate hands you, is exactly what keeps players coming back.

Bilbo's Adventure, Now a Game

Designed by Reiner Knizia — the mind behind dozens of beloved classics — this competitive, story-driven dice game takes players through eight unique scenarios drawn from Tolkien's The Hobbit. From the cozy comfort of Bag End to the shadow of the Lonely Mountain, each adventure presents its own challenges and obstacles to overcome.

The central mechanic is dice drafting: players roll a pool of dice — five six-sided and one twelve-sided — and make tactical decisions about which results to claim. Those dice become resources and actions, helping Bilbo navigate the dangers of his unexpected journey. Each player works through their own individual player book, tracking progress with dry-erase markers and tokens, which means every session can be wiped clean and replayed with a fresh challenge. With eight distinct adventures and competitive scoring, the replayability here is genuine.

Who Sits Down for This One

This one plays one to four people and runs about thirty to sixty minutes — a solid fit for family game night, a relaxed evening with friends, or a focused solo session. Recommended for ages ten and up, it sits in the light-to-medium range: the rules are approachable enough for younger players and newcomers, but Knizia's trademark strategic texture means experienced players will find real decisions to make. Tolkien fans and dice game enthusiasts alike will find a lot to enjoy here.

What's in the Box

The component design leans into replayability in a smart way. Each player gets their own book to write in and wipe clean — no scorepads to burn through, no extra purchases needed. The included dry-erase markers are a thoughtful touch, and the custom twelve-sided die adds a wild-card element you won't find in a standard dice game. Artwork throughout draws directly from the world of The Hobbit, giving the whole experience a storybook quality that fits the source material well.
