Set Out from The Shire — Magic Returns to Middle-earth
Magic: The Gathering's journey through Middle-earth continues with The Hobbit, a full set release that takes players back to the beloved story of Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, and Thorin's company of Dwarves. Where The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth explored the War of the Ring, this set returns to the grand beginning — the unexpected adventure, the riddles in the dark, and the dragon sleeping on a mountain of gold. Mechanically, The Hobbit introduces the Amass and Recruit themes, letting players build and command armies in the shadow of The Lonely Mountain as they race to claim the treasure hoard of Erebor. This is a licensed collaboration with Middle-earth Enterprises, bringing one of fantasy's most iconic stories to the Magic card frame in full.
What's Inside a Prerelease Pack
The Prerelease Pack is your first chance to crack open The Hobbit before the set officially hits shelves on August 14, 2026. It's a self-contained sealed experience designed to walk players through deck building and get them playing immediately. Each pack contains 6 Play Boosters, with every booster delivering 14 cards drawn from the main set (cards HOB 1–248). Each Play Booster is guaranteed to include 1 traditional foil rare or mythic rare, making the Prerelease Pack an especially solid value for players and collectors alike. Pull rates include a chance at 2 rares (26% of packs) or even 3 rares (2% of packs), plus foil borderless rare and mythic rare treatments appearing in under 1% of boosters. Every pack also contains 1 traditional foil card of any rarity, and roughly 1 in 5 packs swaps the standard land for a traditional foil land. The pack is rounded out with a Spindown life counter to keep the games running smoothly.
Who Should Pick Up a Prerelease Pack
Prerelease Packs are the ideal starting point for players who want to engage with The Hobbit at launch. If you've never drafted or built a sealed deck before, the Prerelease format is specifically designed to guide you through it — you build a deck from what you open, keep everything you crack, and play for fun. For experienced players, it's simply the earliest opportunity to get The Hobbit cards in hand, explore the new mechanics, and start building toward Standard, Pioneer, or Commander. The guaranteed foil rare in every pack also makes this appealing for collectors who want to start their set collection from day one. Format legality for The Hobbit has not yet been confirmed — check back closer to the August 2026 release date for official format announcements.
