Description

Two Cities, Two Partnerships, One Clever Dilemma

Every turn pulls you in two directions at once. You're negotiating with the player on your left, trading ideas with the player on your right, and quietly calculating which city you need to tip in your favour — all before the next hand of tiles lands in front of you. Between Two Cities is the rare game where cooperation and competition aren't opposites. They're happening at the same time, between the same people, every single round.

About the Game

From Stonemaier Games — the publisher behind Wingspan and Viticulture — Between Two Cities is a simultaneously collaborative and competitive city-building game. Each player works as a city planner partnered with the players on either side of them, co-constructing two city centres at once. On each turn, you draw tiles representing districts, parks, shops, and civic buildings, choose two to keep, and then negotiate with each neighbour about where those tiles fit best. At the end of the game, your score is determined by your lower-scoring city — so you can't afford to neglect either partnership.

That single rule creates a constant, satisfying tension. Helping one neighbour too much means falling behind on the other side. It rewards attentive play, a little diplomacy, and the ability to spot when a shared city is quietly falling apart.

Who It's For

The Essential Edition plays with 2 to 4 players and suits anyone comfortable with a light-to-medium game — easy enough to learn in a few minutes, engaging enough to keep experienced players thinking. It's a strong pick for couples, friend groups, and family game nights where not everyone wants a two-hour commitment. Games typically run 20 to 40 minutes, making it a natural opener or a satisfying standalone session. The simultaneous partnership mechanic also makes it a genuinely social experience — you're talking to your neighbours throughout, not sitting in silence.

What's in the Box

The Essential Edition delivers a clean, focused package of the core game. Stonemaier is known for producing components that feel considered — solid tiles, clear iconography, and artwork that makes each city feel like a real place taking shape tile by tile. The Essential Edition streamlines the experience without sacrificing what makes the game tick, making it an accessible entry point and a confident gift for someone new to modern board gaming.
