Description

Ancient Ritual Combat, Reborn at Your Table

Long before modern strategy games filled our shelves, the Maya of Guatemala were playing Puluc — a running-fight race game where every step forward is also a step into danger. Pieces advance, capture, and carry captured enemies back across the board in a tug-of-war that feels nothing like the abstract strategy games most players grew up with. There is real tension in watching an opponent's warrior march steadily toward your side of the board, carrying your own pieces hostage behind them.

Published by Lemery Games, Puluc is a faithful recreation of a traditional Guatemalan board game with roots stretching back centuries into Mesoamerican culture. The goal is straightforward: capture all of your opponent's Warriors before they capture yours. Players move their pieces along the track using dice or lots, landing on enemy pieces to capture them — but captured warriors are carried along until the captor reaches safety or is taken in turn. That reversal mechanic — your captured pieces coming back into play — gives Puluc its distinctive rhythm of advance, loss, and recovery. It plays like a race game with teeth.

Puluc is a two-player game at its core, making it an excellent choice for couples, siblings, or anyone looking for a compact head-to-head experience with genuine historical depth. The rules are light enough to learn in a single sitting, but the back-and-forth nature of the captures gives it a satisfying push-and-pull that keeps both players engaged from the first roll to the last. It fits naturally into a casual evening, a coffee break, or a travel bag — games move quickly and rematches are almost inevitable.

Beyond its gameplay, Puluc carries real cultural significance as one of the documented traditional games of the Maya people, making it a meaningful addition to any collection focused on world games or game history. This copy arrives brand new and factory sealed, in mint condition.
