Description

Build Your Railroad Empire One Chip at a Time

There's something deeply satisfying about watching your railway company grow from a single modest station into a sprawling network of lines cutting across a continent. Lightning Train captures that feeling — the careful draw from your bag, the calculated placement of a chip that opens a crucial route just before your rival can get there, the moment a perfectly timed delivery floods your coffers while everyone else scrambles to catch up. It's competitive, it's strategic, and it moves.

About Lightning Train

From Dire Wolf Digital, the studio behind Clank! and Dune: Imperium, Lightning Train is a bag-building game set across eight regions of North America. Players run competing railway companies, drawing resources from their personal bags and placing chips to establish stations and train lines. The goal is straightforward — deliver goods to the cities that need them, secure your routes, and outmanoeuvre your rivals before the final whistle. The bag-building twist means your company evolves as you play: every choice you make to upgrade your resources shapes what options you'll have on future turns, rewarding long-term thinking without punishing newer players who are still finding their footing.

The double-sided board gives the game real replayability, and the lightning trains — the game's signature mechanism — act as powerful accelerants that can change the shape of a route in a single turn. There's a genuine tension between cooperation and competition here; sometimes you need a rival's line to extend your own network, and sometimes you need to shut them out entirely.

Who Should Play This

Lightning Train plays one to four players and works best with three or four around the table, where the competition for key stations and routes really heats up. Recommended for ages 12 and up, it sits comfortably in the medium-weight category — more strategic depth than a family filler, but without the rulebook overhead of a heavy-weight game. Expect sessions in the 60 to 120 minute range. It's a strong choice for hobby game nights with players who enjoy making meaningful decisions, and a natural next step for anyone who loved Clank! and wants something with a fresh setting and a tactile twist.

What's in the Box

The component count here is genuinely impressive — over 400 punch tokens, a large double-sided board, 31 wooden station markers, 15 oversized production cards, four player boards, four company bags, and more. The wooden pieces give the game a satisfying physical presence, and the sheer variety of tokens means no two sessions feel quite the same. If you've come to expect quality production from Dire Wolf's titles, Lightning Train delivers.
