What It Is

Published by Catan Studio, the CATAN 5-6 Player Expansion is exactly what it sounds like: an official extension that opens up the classic island-building game to five or six players instead of the standard four. The hex-based board grows to accommodate more territory, more competition, and more negotiation. A built-in turn-taking mechanism keeps everyone at the table engaged even when it isn't their turn — a small but important tweak that makes a real difference with six people around the table. This expansion is designed specifically for the CATAN 6th Edition base game, so the components slot right in without any awkward workarounds.

If you already love Catan, you know the drill: settle the island, gather resources, build roads and cities, and trade your way to ten victory points before anyone else. This expansion doesn't change any of that — it just makes sure no one gets left out.

Who It's For

This is an essential add-on for households and game groups that regularly seat five or six players. Recommended for ages 10 and up, it plays at roughly the same weight as the base game — medium-light, with enough strategy to keep experienced players engaged and an accessible ruleset that welcomes newcomers. Expect sessions to run a little longer than the standard four-player game, typically in the 90-minute range depending on the group. Ideal for larger family game nights, friend groups, or anyone whose base game box keeps getting outgrown.

What's in the Box

The expansion includes eleven additional terrain hexes and four sea frame pieces to extend the board, 28 number discs, 34 cards, and 48 wooden playing pieces in two new colors — roads, settlements, and cities for two full additional players. Two player aid cards round out the package, and everything is built to the same component standard as the base game. Note that this is an expansion only — the CATAN 6th Edition base game is required to play.
