Carcassonne Expansion 5: Messengers & Mayors
Strategy Expansion for the Classic Tile-Laying Game
Bring new layers of strategy, tactical timing, and high-impact scoring opportunities to your favorite medieval tile-laying game with Carcassonne Expansion 5: Messengers & Mayors. Designed by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede and published by Hans im Glück, this expansion introduces powerful new follower types and a dynamic scoring track system that rewards players for careful planning and clever opportunism.
If you already enjoy the strategic depth of Carcassonne, Messengers & Mayors enhances gameplay with fresh decisions, meaningful interactions, and exciting bonus actions that can shift the momentum of a match at exactly the right moment.
Note: This is an expansion. A copy of the base Carcassonne game is required to play.
Expand Your Medieval Domain
Messengers & Mayors introduces three new types of followers, each bringing unique abilities that fundamentally change how players compete for control of the growing landscape.
Mayor – Power Through Prosperity
The Mayor gains strength from the cities they occupy. Instead of counting as a single follower, the Mayor’s power equals the number of pennants in that city. This means that wealthy cities become strongholds of influence, allowing the Mayor to outnumber opposing followers and claim control of large urban areas.
Strategically placing a Mayor can turn a contested city into a guaranteed victory—if you plan it right.
Wagon – Mobile Opportunity
The Wagon is a versatile follower that can move from one completed feature to another adjacent feature. After scoring a road, city, or monastery, the Wagon can immediately travel to a neighboring feature and continue working.
This mobility allows skilled players to chain scoring opportunities and maximize efficiency from a single placement.
Barn – Farm Dominance
The Barn changes how farms score entirely. When placed at an intersection of fields, the Barn scores the farm immediately rather than waiting until the end of the game. This introduces a powerful mid-game scoring mechanism and a new way to secure large farming territories before your opponents do.
Used wisely, the Barn can generate massive points earlier than expected.
