Trust No One in the Tunnels

Every round starts the same way — someone deals out the role cards, everyone glances at their hand, and suddenly you're not sure if the person across the table is helping dig toward the gold or quietly steering every tunnel the wrong way. Saboteur is the game where suspicion becomes strategy, and the moment you catch a saboteur in the act is genuinely satisfying every single time.

What You're Getting Into

From Amigo Games, Saboteur is a classic hidden-role card game dressed up as a gold rush adventure. Players are dwarven miners working together — or so it seems — to build a tunnel network from a start card to one of three face-down goal cards, one of which hides the gold. Most players are honest miners trying to reach the treasure. But a secret few are saboteurs, working to block the path, break tools, and run out the card supply before the gold is ever found. The miners win if they reach the gold. The saboteurs win if they don't. Nobody announces what they are.

What makes it click is how naturally the tension builds. A suspicious tunnel placement here, a well-timed broken lantern there — the table starts talking, accusing, defending. And sometimes the person everyone suspected most turns out to be completely innocent.

Who Should Play It

Saboteur plays 3 to 10 players and genuinely shines with five or more at the table — the social chaos of a larger group is where the hidden roles come alive. It's recommended for ages 8 and up and sits firmly in the light category: rules take about five minutes to explain, and a full game wraps up in 30 to 45 minutes. It's a great pick for casual game nights, family gatherings with older kids, or as a warm-up before something heavier. New players tend to get it immediately and want to play again right after.

What Makes It Work

The card art is charming and clear — tunnel cards connect or don't in obvious ways, which keeps the focus on the social play rather than the puzzle of the map. The role cards are satisfyingly secretive, and the push-your-luck element of deciding when to accuse someone (and risk being wrong) adds a layer of real decision-making to what could otherwise be a simple card-laying exercise. Short play time also means you'll get several rounds in a single sitting, which matters — the best moments in Saboteur tend to happen in game three when everyone thinks they've figured out who the saboteurs are.
