Description

Time Is Your Most Dangerous Resource

Every decision in Pendulum costs you something — not coins, not cards, but seconds. Actual seconds. Three sand timers run simultaneously at the table, and every action you take is governed by which ones are flipping. Rush the wrong move and you'll find yourself locked out of the actions you need most. Wait too long and a rival noble will seize the province you had your eye on. This is a real-time strategy game that rewards calm under pressure, and the tension it generates is unlike anything else on the table.

Stonemaier Games — known for titles like Wingspan and Scythe — brings a genuinely novel idea to the strategy space with Pendulum. Players take on the roles of rival nobles competing to prove their worth and claim the throne of the Timeless King. The board is divided into spaces tied to three different timers: a fast green timer, a medium purple timer, and a slow red timer. You can only take actions in zones corresponding to timers that are not currently running — so timing your moves, and knowing when to pause and flip a timer, becomes the central skill. There are no turns. No waiting for others. Just the relentless tick of sand.

Pendulum works well for one to five players, though it shines brightest with three or four at the table where the competition for board space and timer control gets genuinely fierce. It's designed for players aged 14 and up, and sits comfortably in the medium-weight category — complex enough to reward strategic thinking, but teachable in a single session. Games typically run 60 to 90 minutes, though experienced groups move faster. It's a strong pick for regular game nights with players who enjoy something more demanding than the average fare, and an excellent next step for groups ready to move beyond lighter titles.

The production quality is exactly what Stonemaier fans expect. The sand timers are sturdy, the player boards are thick and satisfying to work with, and the noble character cards add meaningful asymmetry — each noble has unique abilities that push you toward a particular playstyle. The achievement card system layers in a secondary scoring track that rewards adapting your strategy mid-game rather than committing to a single path from the start. There's also a fully supported solo mode for those nights when you just want to beat the clock on your own terms.
