A New Angle on an Old Wheel
Just when you think you've mastered the art of the aging cave, the board rotates — and suddenly everything you planned is somewhere else entirely. Formaggio captures that satisfying disorientation of a strategy that almost came together, paired with the quiet triumph of adapting faster than everyone else at the table.
About the Game
From Road to Infamy, Formaggio is a standalone expansion to Fromage — meaning you can play it on its own or alongside the original game. Set in the wonderfully niche world of artisanal cheesemaking, players are craftspeople sending workers out across a shared board to produce and age their finest wheels. But Formaggio adds a twist that changes everything: once all players have placed their workers, the board itself rotates. Cheese ages in place, quadrants shift, and each player faces a completely new section of the board on their next turn. What you set up last round might benefit someone else entirely — or it might ripen into exactly what you needed.
It's a game about planning ahead while staying nimble, reading the board as it moves beneath your feet, and making the most of whatever quadrant the game hands you next.
Who Should Pull Up a Chair
Formaggio plays one to four players and is recommended for ages 14 and up, placing it comfortably in medium-weight territory — there's enough strategic texture to engage experienced players, but the rotating board mechanic is intuitive enough that it won't take all night to explain. It's a strong pick for game nights where the group wants something more engaging than a light filler but isn't ready to commit to a three-hour heavy strategy game. Works well as a two-player game for couples who enjoy a bit of competitive planning, and solo players will find the puzzle elements genuinely compelling.
What Makes It Stand Out
The rotating board isn't just a gimmick — it's the engine that makes every game feel different. Because the board shifts after each round of worker placement, no two games play out the same way, and the decisions that feel safe in round one can look very different by round three. As a standalone expansion, Formaggio also offers flexibility: bring it out on its own, or integrate it with Fromage for a richer, more layered experience. Road to Infamy has built a game where the central mechanic and the theme genuinely reinforce each other — aging cheese needs time and the right conditions, and so does a good strategy.
