Description

When the Kingdom Falls Apart, That's When Things Get Interesting

There's a particular kind of satisfaction in watching your opponent hand you a useless Ruin card, only to discover you've built an entire strategy around making trash work for you. Dominion: Dark Ages shifts the familiar rhythms of kingdom-building into something grimier, stranger, and more mechanically rewarding — a set where the discard pile becomes a resource and the worst cards in the game start looking like opportunities.

What It Is

Published by Rio Grande Games and designed by Dominion creator Donald Vaccarino, Dark Ages is the seventh major expansion to the landmark card game. Where base Dominion rewards efficient acquisition, Dark Ages rewards cleverness with what you've been given — or what you've been stuck with. The expansion introduces 35 new Kingdom cards built around two interlocking themes: the trash and upgrading. Cards do things when they're trashed. Other cards care about what's already in the trash. Some cards upgrade themselves over time, and others let you transform your opponent's deck in ways they won't enjoy.

Two new card types add mechanics that don't exist anywhere else in Dominion. Ruins are bad cards you hand to other players — Victory Points in reverse, clogging their decks and slowing their engines. Shelters offer an alternative to the standard starting Estates, giving players a different foundation and meaningfully changing how early turns feel depending on which set you're building with. This is an expansion that rewards players who already love Dominion and want more ways to play it badly against each other.

Who It's For

Dark Ages is built for existing Dominion players — ideally those who have spent time with the base game and are ready for a set that adds strategic depth rather than just volume. It works best with two to four players who enjoy puzzling out unusual card interactions. At its core it remains a medium-weight card game, but the new mechanics push toward the more strategic end of that range. Not the right starting point for someone brand new to Dominion, but a meaningful upgrade for anyone who already owns a copy and wants to expand what the game can do.

Features & Highlights

Five hundred cards is a substantial addition to any Dominion collection, and the variety here is genuinely high — this isn't filler. The Shelters mechanic alone changes the opening game in ways that ripple through the whole session, and the trash-matters theme creates a satisfying layer of decision-making that doesn't exist in earlier sets. Dark Ages also pairs exceptionally well with other expansions, giving experienced players a much wider pool of Kingdom cards to draw from when building custom setups. The card design leans into the Dark Ages aesthetic — appropriately rough-edged and atmospheric — without losing the clarity that makes Dominion easy to play quickly once you know what you're doing.
