It's a light game with a surprisingly sharp edge, and that tension keeps every round feeling alive from the first tile to the last.

What Is Melodies?

From Next Move Games — the publisher behind crowd-pleasers like Azul — Melodies is an abstract tile-placement game with a musical twist. Players take turns drafting musical notes and placing them on their personal score sheet, trying to build the longest consecutive runs of the same note while also satisfying the hidden objectives on their melody cards. The theme isn't just decorative: the logic of how notes relate to one another actually drives the decision-making, making the music feel like more than window dressing.

The rules take about five minutes to explain, but the strategic layer reveals itself quickly. Do you chase a long run of one note, or spread across multiple melodies for flexibility? Every draft pick is a small puzzle, and every tile your opponents take quietly reshapes your options.

Who Should Be Playing This?

Melodies is a genuinely excellent fit for two to six players, and it scales well across that range — two-player games feel tightly competitive, while larger groups add a wonderfully chaotic draft dynamic. Recommended for ages eight and up, this is a light-to-medium weight game that plays in around thirty to forty-five minutes. It sits comfortably in the space between a casual family game night pick and a gateway game for someone just getting into modern tabletop — easy enough to hand to a non-gamer, interesting enough to satisfy a seasoned player.

What's in the Box

Next Move Games has a well-earned reputation for producing components that punch above their weight, and Melodies continues that tradition. The note tiles are thick and satisfying to handle, the score sheets are clean and intuitive, and the melody cards give each game a different strategic shape. The compact box size makes this an easy one to bring to a dinner party or slip into a travel bag without a second thought. It's the kind of game that earns a permanent spot on the shelf by being the answer to "what should we play?" more often than expected.

Specification

Detail

Publisher

Next Move Games

Players

2–6

Recommended Player Count

3–5

Age Range

8+

Play Time

30–45 minutes

Game Weight

Light

Language

English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0603/4980/8728/files/s-l1600_3c1234fd-b345-402a-a0fe-82e43cb05691.jpg?v=1793226099
